When Justin Nelson, A98, joined JP Morgan, he encountered a landscape
void of campus recruitment from his alma mater, Tufts University. Armed with a
dual degree in chemistry and economics, Nelson secured his initial role as a
web developer through personal connections rather than established recruiting
networks. His journey within JP Morgan saw him ascend to the position of
managing director in asset management, a testament to his expertise and dedication. 

Recognizing the challenges he faced, Nelson was determined to ease the path for future Tufts
graduates. In 2006, he embarked on a mission to make Tufts a core recruiting
school for JP Morgan’s asset management division. This initiative involved
significant personal effort, from arranging travel to covering expenses,
without the usual financial and staff support provided to established core schools. 

Initially, Nelson’s efforts yielded modest results. However, his persistence paid off as more Tufts
students began to show interest, leading to a steady increase in the number of
internships and entry-level positions being offered. By 2009, Tufts had officially
become a core school for JP Morgan. Over 20 Tufts graduates have since benefited from
this arrangement, securing internships and full-time roles within the
prestigious financial institution. 

One such beneficiary is Jon Trott, A10, who secured a summer internship in 2009 amid the
financial crisis, later transitioning to a full-time position at JP Morgan.
Trott credits Nelson’s efforts for providing him with this crucial opportunity. 

Today, the network of Tufts alumni at JP Morgan continues to grow, further strengthening the bond
between the university and the finance giant. Alumni actively participate in
recruiting efforts, screening résumés, visiting campus, and offering guidance to current students. 

Justin Nelson’s dedication has not only facilitated career opportunities for Tufts graduates
but has also enhanced the university’s presence in the financial sector. Justin Nelson remains a pivotal figure in bridging the gap between academia and
industry, encouraging fellow alumni to champion Tufts within their respective firms.
