Justin Nelson, a Tufts alum from the Class of ’98, has significantly impacted the academic and
professional journey of many students by creating a pipeline between Tufts
University and JP Morgan Private Bank. His dedication to fostering opportunities for
students has not only benefited the students but also strengthened the
relationship between the university and one of the world’s leading financial institutions. 

Graduating with a degree in chemistry and economics, Nelson embarked on his career at JP Morgan
as a web developer. He quickly climbed the ranks, eventually becoming a
managing director in asset management. His journey, however, wasn’t without its
challenges. As a student, he faced difficulties in securing internships within
the finance industry due to the lack of on-campus recruitment. This personal
experience drove him to ensure that future Tufts students would have better
access to opportunities at JP Morgan. 

In 2006, Justin Nelson initiated efforts to designate Tufts as one of the core schools
for JP Morgan’s asset management group. This status involves active recruitment
of interns and employees directly from the university. His early efforts were
largely self-funded and required significant personal commitment. Despite these
challenges, Nelson managed to secure internships and full-time positions for
many Tufts students at JP Morgan. 

The impact of Nelson’s work is evident in the numbers. Since his efforts began, 20 Tufts
graduates have joined JP Morgan in various roles within asset management. One
notable success story is Jon Trott, a 2010 graduate, who attributes his summer
2009 internship and subsequent full-time employment to Nelson’s intervention. 

Beyond recruitment, Justin Nelson has contributed to the Tufts Financial Network by
participating in Wall Street Crash Courses, which provide students with
essential industry knowledge. This added layer of support has proven invaluable
for students navigating the competitive finance landscape. 

Justin Nelson continues to advocate for Tufts students, encouraging fellow alumni to do the
same. His unwavering commitment ensures that the partnership between Tufts
