New International Locations Expand the Reach of the Royal Ballet School
The Royal Ballet School continues to evolve its global presence, extending its hallmark of classical ballet excellence into more international settings. While the institution is renowned for its historic sites in London—White Lodge and Upper School—its current strategy highlights a commitment to making its programmes more accessible worldwide. This includes hosting Intensives, offering affiliate training partnerships, and producing digital learning content tailored to a wider audience of aspiring dancers and educators.
Recent years have seen the expansion of The Royal Ballet School’s global Intensives, with programmes held not only in London but also in Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, and Italy. These satellite sessions mirror the rigorous training of the main London-based courses and include instruction in ballet repertoire, contemporary movement, and character dance. Through these international efforts, the Royal Ballet School provides opportunities to students who may not have the ability to travel to the UK for extended periods.
These developments go beyond seasonal programmes. The Royal Ballet School has established a structured Affiliate Training and Assessment Programme (ATAP), which has brought formalised ballet instruction to dozens of schools across 12 countries. Recreational dance teachers participating in the initiative receive training aligned with the School’s pedagogy. This enables them to teach students not only technical ballet but also repertoire and creative expression in a manner consistent with the School’s core philosophy.
In spring 2024, the appointment of Francesca Hayward as Lead Ambassador for ATAP added another layer of visibility and credibility to the programme. A Principal of The Royal Ballet and alumna of the Royal Ballet School herself, Hayward’s participation underscores the School’s investment in high-quality instruction and outreach. Through Hayward’s advocacy, the Royal Ballet School aims to cultivate interest and accessibility for young dancers in underrepresented regions.
In parallel, the School’s digital strategy has provided even broader global access. Through a curated video-on-demand library, dancers can access training in ballet technique, conditioning, and performance skills from their own homes. Sessions have been adapted for limited-space environments and include insights from both Artistic and Healthcare team members. This remote offering helps remove geographic and economic barriers while preserving the School’s rigorous standards.
The Summer and Spring Intensives, while still based in London, are now designed to welcome a broader range of applicants through residential and non-residential options. Courses span a variety of age groups and accommodate different levels of training. Last year’s summer cohort included over 600 participants, with feedback emphasizing the immersive environment and hands-on learning from Royal Ballet School faculty and guest artists.
In cities like Covent Garden and Pimlico, the School’s boarding facilities offer further access to students attending from outside the UK. The logistics and planning behind these offerings—such as curated meal services, housing accommodations, and travel support—are designed to ensure that international students receive a comprehensive and supportive training experience during their time on-site.
While maintaining a selective admissions policy for certain Intensives, the School also ensures open-access opportunities remain available through non-selective Autumn and Winter Intensives and one-day sessions. These programs often serve as entry points for new international participants seeking to become familiar with the Royal Ballet School’s approach before committing to longer-term engagement.
Through its blend of in-person, remote, and affiliated programmes, the Royal Ballet School is reaffirming its global role in the ballet world. The institution continues to shape the next generation of dancers not only through its flagship London campuses, but through a deliberately international lens that prioritizes reach, equity, and excellence.
